Tap water consumption

1. What is the difference between tap water and bottled water?

About bottled water:

Hundreds of billions of plastic bottles are used to bottle water per year. Such huge amounts of PET bottles are quickly turning into waste and only 16% are recycled. The rest of 84% are pollutant as they are so slowly decaying that the decay would take hundreds of years to complete.

Researchers estimate that perpetuing this kind of water marketing will turn into real disaster within the next decade.

About the cold tap water

Water is permanently monitored from the river, through the treatment processes, to your tap. Water is very cheap. Moreover, it is environmental friendly, as it is not bottled in plastic bottles and is always fresh.

2. I get the impression I have a much higher consumption. How can I measure the consumption myself?

The water consumption varies depending on:

  • habits (water serves for drinking, cooking, toilet or laundry), equipment (household appliances, pool)
  • household uses (bath, shower, wetting the garden, carwash) new event in the family: increase of the number of the persons living in the same house etc.
  • new event in the family: increase of the number of the persons living in the same house etc.

You can calculate an estimate annual consumption here.

3. Are there water saving taps?

Using an efficient showerhead can reduce the consumption. The new aerators for shower help to provide a sensation similar to a powerful jet but are less water consuming

There are now mixt taps in the market, provided with an option to turn the water on and off at the same time adjusting the water flow and temperature.

Water taste and colour

5. The water does not look and taste as usual. What can be done?

In case you have not used the plumbing for a long time (days, weeks), the water running when you first turn on the tap is the water that has been blocked in the pipes.

Whenever you notice an abnormal appearance of the tap water, we recommend:

  • Letting the water run for a few seconds
  • Finding out whether the water supply was turned off for service
  • Checking whether your neighbours have the same problem

Do not allow any unauthorised persons to service your water supply network or the internal plumbing.

6. The water tastes or smells like chlorine. What can I do?

The stronger chlorine smell of the water occurs under extreme temperatures (high or low), as well as whenever the microbiological (bacteriological) safety of the supplied water requires a higher concentration of the disinfectant to the upper limit permitted.

Such measure is only purposed to protect your health.
Chlorine is a volatile substance. To adjust the taste of the water, leave the water in an uncovered recipient or bowl before drinking it. If possible, put such recipient in the fridge but no longer than 24 hours. The cold temperature will repair the taste. Or you can serve water with ice cubes. A few drops of lemon juice or one leaf of mint can also make the chlorine taste disappear, and the new flavours may be quite pleasant.

7. Why is sometimes the water reddish/brownish?

When the water pressure is too high in the pipes, iron micro particles may come off the pipe walls and cause the water to be brownish. Although this is not hazardous to one's health, we recommend consuming the water after it returns to its normal appearances.

Health and safety

8. How is the quality of water monitored?

The water quality monitoring relies on strict procedures and state-of-the-art measuring instruments. This is performed both in the water plants where the automatic testers supervise each treatment phase in real time to check for efficacy, and in the water tanks and supply networks, doubled by lab tests.

Approximately 120,000 indicators are checked annually for a number of 6,000 samples taken from the supply network.

Apa Nova Bucureşti water test labs are accredited by the Romanian Accreditation Association (RENAR http://www.renar.ro); they employ qualified personnel for water chemistry and microbiology and are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that guarantees the accuracy of the results obtained for all the quality indicators of the drinking water.
